Grady Hartman graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1992. He then attended the University of Wisconsin – River Falls where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. During college he served as a reserve officer for the River Falls Police Department and in 1995 was sent to the 10 week recruit school by the River Falls Police Department. He worked for a short time at the Baraboo Police Department before being offered a position with the Rhinelander Police Department. Grady and his wife Tracy were happy to accept the job and move back to Rhinelander in 1997. In 1999, Grady accepted a position with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
Grady and Tracy have a strong commitment to the residents of Oneida County and have served in many different areas. Grady has coached t-ball, softball, baseball, football and wrestling as his kids have moved through various sports. He has worked closely with the Pop Warner program and was president of the Rhinelander Wrestling Club. Grady also served on the Rhinelander Community Committee on Co-Curricular Activities that was developed to save taxpayers’ money while increasing participation in school sports. Through that Committee the school board was presented with ideas that helped cut $50,000 from the 2012 budget.
Grady served on the Crescent Town Board from April 2009 to January 2013. As a Crescent Supervisor he helped to manage the Town’s $700,000 budget. Grady also served as a School board member for the School District of Rhinelander from January 2012 to January 2013. Grady worked to decrease the school budget by $2 million for the 2012-2013 school year. In December 2012, Grady was appointed Sheriff by Governor Walker and had to resign from his two board positions.
Grady and his family enjoy camping, ATV riding, sports and card games. Grady can be spotted at wrestling meets, softball and baseball games, football games, volleyball games, cross-country meets and track meets. In January, Grady and Tracy’s oldest daughter left for Air Force Basic Training and then on to tech school where she is training in Avionics for the Air National Guard.
